The Yoram Leowenstein Acting Studio Proudly Presents:
The Duchess of Malfi
A tale of rulership and power, money and corruption which still “stars” in the news today.
In the center of the plot – the Duchess, a rich young widow, and her two brothers who forbid her to marry again, so that the money she inherited would be kept in their hands.
The duchess decides to rebel and secretly marries her house manager. Both brothers take advantage of the political power to enforce their will, and employ a hired killer to spy and report Duchess every move. When the lover’s affair is discovered, all is swept to a swirl of intrigue, lies, secrets, revenge and bloodshed.
Director’s statement:
Webster wrote the Duchess of Malfi (loosely based on a true story) in his violent and sharp style, as an intense and compelling plot, while also criticizing the corruption which affects all that is good, and questions human morality. His characters swim in rivers of blood, but contemplate witty and macabre insights that are no less than those of Shakespeare on the one hand and Tarantino on the other. The moral complexity of the characters and the dense and rhythmic events makes this play a sheer pleasure.
