The Yoram Loewenstein Acting Studio (SELA)

The Acting Studio was founded in 1988 by Yoram Loewenstein, CEO, founder and head of the Studio.

The Studio is located in the heart of the Hatikva neighbourhood, and its goal is to nurture a new generation of actors, who are deeply rooted within Israeli society, who can be the cutting edge of the theatre, cinema and television in Israel.

The Studio has several acting programs: triennial program for training Actors, preparatory courses for acting, acting workshops for the general public and more. In addition, the Studio offers a variety of workshops and enriching activities, such as theatre days for schools and business events.

Every year the Studio produces a unique and diverse repertoire of plays with 3rd year students. The productions perform in the Studios two auditoriums (the Abbas Auditorium at 19 Hanoch St., and the Orna Ben Horin Auditorium at 22 Mevaser St.), which are located in the Hatikva neighbourhood, and are performed in front of an audience. The Studio productions are highly praised, and participate in festivals around the world.

The students of the Studio work with 19 groups in the Hatikva neighbourhood (about 300 participants) as part of their training as actors: groups of children and youth at risk, religious youth, homeless youth, elementary schools in the neighbourhood, the visually impaired, the disabled, children with emotional issues, the elderly and more.

The community theatre productions represent Israel at international festivals around the world with great success. The Studio aims to create mutual relations with its surrounding community, which will contribute to the creative and personal development of the students, and can open up new creative avenues of applying the art of theatre for the benefit of the community.

Some history

Before the Studio became one of the leading acting schools in Israel, Yoram Loewenstein led and directed a private acting workshop in 1982, in a living room of a house on 9 HaAvoda St. in Tel Aviv, the residents of which would vacate the house for this purpose twice a week.

In 1988 he rented a building in Tel Aviv for his school, and at that was when the first full class (class of 1992) started. Among its graduates were Aki Avni and Ayelet Zurer.

In 1994, the Studio became a non-profit organization and in 1997, Loewenstein established the “Abbas” Auditorium in the Hatikva neighbourhood at the south of Tel Aviv.

As of 2000 The Yoram Loewenstein Acting Studio is located in Hanna Rovina House in 22 Mevaser St. Hanna Rovina has built the place in the 1960s as a daycare center for the children of the HaTikva neighbourhood.

In 2020, Yoram Loewenstein received the lifetime achievement award from Rosenblum Prize for the Performing Arts.
