“Just a Broken Bird” is a sharp, passionate contemporary reimagining of Chekhov’s The Seagull, set against the pastoral yet charged landscape of upstate New York.
At the center of the story is Connie, a young artist who is brilliant, vulnerable, and convinced he is on the verge of a major breakthrough. He premieres his masterpiece in an intimate performance at the family home, before close friends, former lovers, and his mother, a legendary actress, who arrives with her new partner, a successful and electrifying writer. The evening quickly unravels: the performance collapses, egos shatter, and desire, jealousy, and long buried secrets rise to the surface.
This is a play about art and the need to be seen, about parents and children, about loves and creative dreams that never came to fruition, and about the gap between who we want to be and who we truly are.
A gripping drama that is also a wild, smart, and very funny comedy, heart breaking and hilarious at the same time.
